Any minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that uses needles to work under your skin is an injectable treatment. While the process may sound easy enough, Dr. Lara takes the time to sit down with each of her patients to ensure that they understand what happens every step of the way.
Dr. Lara does the injecting herself and marks up the areas you want treated ahead of time to give you a better idea of what the goals are and make sure you’re included in every decision. There are several different types of cosmetic injectables, but the two that Dr. Lara depends on for her patients are dermal fillers and Botox® Cosmetic.
What issues can cosmetic injectables treat?
These treatments address wrinkles, lines, and crevasses in your face that are the results of losing elasticity and volume with time. Not all lines are created equally, though. Wrinkles can be divided into two categories, passive and active.
Passive wrinkles and lines result from skin following the contours of support tissue beneath the outer layers. This is where the collagen and elastin are found, the tissue that supplies your skin with tone and, in your younger years, plump up your youthful, healthy appearance.
Active wrinkles form over the muscles of your face that produce expressions. As you get older, some muscles take on a permanently contracted state, such as the worry lines between and above your eyes. The skin over these muscles takes on the shape of the contraction. Fortunately, there’s a range of products to address both passive and active wrinkles.
How are active wrinkles treated?
Dr. Lara uses Botox Cosmetic to force the muscles causing wrinkles to relax. This substance, injected with ultrathin needles, temporarily paralyzes muscles responsible for crow’s-feet and frown lines.
Botox was originally used to treat problems with the muscles surrounding the eyes, so it’s a medical substance with a long history of safe use. Injected into worry lines and crow’s-feet, the resulting muscle relaxation reduces or eliminates surface lines in your skin.
What is the treatment for passive lines and volume loss?
Dr. Lara uses several products, each with its own remarkable characteristics, to restore volume in your face. Alongside the formation of deep lines, the loss of collagen in your skin allows the thin layer of fat to migrate downward, leaving you with hollowed cheeks. As well, your tissue begins to thin with age, which can lead to thinning lips and vertical lines that surround them.
To tackle these areas, Dr. Lara uses Belotero Balance®, Juvéderm®, and her personal favorite, Radiesse®. Each filler uses a unique formulation to boost your skin below the surface, reducing lines and adding youthful fullness to your appearance.
